Description

Germany hosted the Berlin Conference of 1884, where Europe divided Africa between them — and came away with the leftovers. The plan was Mittelafrika: one unbroken belt from the Atlantic to the Indian Ocean, splitting the continent in half and cutting Britain's Cairo-to-Cape route. What Germany actually got was four disconnected territories — German South West Africa, Kamerun, Togoland, and German East Africa — that never linked up. By 1919 all of it had been handed to the powers it was built to compete with.
