Description

On a Hutterite colony the children do not eat with their parents. From the age of five until the age of fifteen they eat every meal in a separate room, at their own tables, an hour before the adults sit down. I am the head cook on a colony of a hundred and fifty people in southern Alberta. In this video I explain how three thousand one hundred and fifty plates a week actually get made, who decides what everyone eats and why none of it is written down, what happens fifteen minutes before every meal for the people who cannot stand in a line — and why the room the children eat in is not called a dining room at all. SOURCES · Hutterites.org — the children's dining room, the move to the adult dining room at fifteen, colony structure and dress · Manitoba Co-operator, "Secrets of a Hutterite Kitchen" (Mary-Ann Kirkby) — the head cook as one of five managerial roles held by women, the first call · Amish America — interview with Linda Maendel, Manitoba Hutterite, on the kitchen and cleaning rotations and the women aged 17 to 45 · Tim Smith, documentary photography of Deerboine Colony, Manitoba — the Essenschul, "eating school" · Giselle Waldner, Hutterite colony cook — cook week, the serving line, and the children eating before the adults · Hutterite population census, 2024 — 58,392 people, 544 colonies If you find an error, put it in the comments and I will pin the correction. I would rather be right than look right.
