Description
In April, a white brick house in Houston's Third Ward went on the market for just under $1.3 million. It drew multiple offers and went under contract within weeks. For fourteen years, strangers had been turning up on its front lawn — one open house ended with a tour bus full of fans being turned away — and the owners had to keep reminding people it wasn't a museum. The seller said he wasn't sure the buyer even knew who grew up there.
She's one of six names fighting for a title at the end of this video.
But first, there's a rule — and Texas needs it more than almost any state.
Dwight Eisenhower was born in Denison and raised in Kansas. Steve Martin was born in Waco and gone to California by five. Carol Burnett, Debbie Reynolds, Usher — all born in Texas, all raised somewhere else. So the rule is simple: raised here, not born here, and the school years decide it.
And the rule cuts both ways. Shaquille O'Neal was born in New Jersey, but he finished high school at Cole in San Antonio and went 68 and 1. Sandra Day O'Connor grew up on an Arizona ranch, but she went to school in El Paso. Simone Biles was born in Ohio and raised in Spring.
254 counties. Six regions. Each one sends a champion to the final — and two of the finalists share a name, because one was named after the other.
Along the way: the Weatherford man Larry Hagman said he based J.R. Ewing on. The two caddies at one Fort Worth golf club who both became legends. The Panhandle oil town where Roy Orbison formed his first band. The county that lost a president in childhood and got him back when he died. And Loving County, population 64, where — with the greatest respect — nobody is famous.
Tell me which county I got wrong. I know you've been typing since El Paso.
