Description
Why Formula 1 Cars Have a Wooden Plank Underneath (Disqualification Risk!) Formula 1 is known for cutting-edge space technology, advanced aerodynamics, and lightweight carbon fiber. But did you know that underneath every single F1 car sits a mandatory wooden plank known as the skid block? In this video, we break down why this piece of wood is vital, how it protects drivers, the strict rules that can get a driver disqualified over just a single millimeter, and the unique material it is made from.
Quick Facts:
Why It Exists: Running lower to the ground produces massive downforce and higher cornering speeds, but bottoming out violently can cause an instant loss of control. The plank enforces a safe minimum ride height.
History: Mandated by the FIA in 1994 following the tragic events at Imola to drastically improve driver safety.
The Wear Limit: The plank starts at 10 mm thick and cannot wear down past 9 mm after a race. Scraping away more than 1 mm results in immediate disqualification.
The Material: It is not standard household lumber. It is made of Jabroc, an extremely tough, heat-resistant composite made of resin-impregnated, compressed beechwood.
