So scientists turned to the DNA of the population that lived across this landscape when the wheel was raised, and the results complicate who actually gets credit for building one of the strangest megalithic structures on Earth. Decades of excavation have produced theories about a solar calendar, a burial monument, and a seasonal herders' gathering point, but every theory runs into the same obstacle: the central cairn has never given up a body. It starts at Peqi'in, a Chalcolithic burial cave where geneticists found a population blended from three ancestral sources, nearly half of them carrying a gene for blue eyes never documented in this region before. It follows a second wave of migration from the Caucasus and Zagros that would become the genetic backbone of nearly everyone living in the Levant today, the same ancestry linked to the people the Hebrew Bible calls Canaanites. And it lands on a 2026 satellite survey that just uncovered twenty-eight undocumented stone circles across the Golan and Galilee, none of them excavated, any one of which could finally hold the burial that closes the gap ancient DNA has never reached. Along the way: the petrous bone technique that made reading Bronze Age genomes possible at all, the Ghassulian culture's sudden collapse, migrants buried alongside locals at Megiddo, the Philistine genetic signature that appeared and vanished at Ashkelon, and the modern Lebanese DNA that still carries most of this same ancient lineage today.
