Description

The United States fought Native American nations for two and a half centuries — and lost as many battles as it won. This documentary argues the Indian Wars were never decided in combat. They were decided by hunger: the deliberate, repeated destruction of the food Native nations depended on to survive, from burned cornfields to slaughtered buffalo herds. Six wars. One weapon, chosen again and again for 250 years. Tracing the pattern from King Philip's War in New England (1675), through George Washington's Sullivan Expedition against the Iroquois (1779), the Creek War and the road to Indian Removal (1813–1814), the Navajo campaign at Canyon de Chelly (1864), the deliberate destruction of the American buffalo (1860s–1880s), to Geronimo's surrender and the final Apache resistance (1886) — this is the story of the weapon American history rarely names. Lessons of History explores the patterns and arguments beneath historical events — not just what happened, but why, and what it reveals about power and conquest.
