Description
WW2, from the records. https://warshelf.com/
March 1945. Germany is losing on every front and Hitler issues what becomes known as the Nero Decree — destroy everything. Factories, bridges, railways, power stations, food supplies. Burn it all rather than let the Allies inherit a functioning country. The man responsible for carrying it out is Albert Speer, Reich Minister of Armaments, the architect who built the Nazi aesthetic and the industrial machine that kept the war running four years longer than it should have. Speer reads the order and decides he will not follow it. Not loudly. Not with a resignation or a speech. He simply routes around it — countermanding orders quietly, telling local commanders the decree doesn't apply to their region, moving through the collapsing Reich in the final weeks convincing men with guns to put them down instead of lighting the fuse. He saves the bridges. He saves the power grid. He saves what is left of Germany's infrastructure from a man who, having lost the country, wanted to make sure no one else could use it either. Hitler dies in his bunker convinced the German people had failed him and deserved their destruction. The country Speer refuses to burn is the one that rebuilds itself into an economic miracle within a decade.
