My Amish home-saving secrets are here! 👉 https://eliashomestead.shop The winter checklist in this video is only one page of the system my grandfather passed down to me. The full book covers the old household methods we still use for heat, water, power, food storage, home repair, lawn, garden, and pests — all built around spending less, wasting less, and being ready before something goes wrong. 👉 Get items: - Hand Crank Weather Radio https://amzn.to/3VbeUZJ - Battery Powered Carbon Monoxide Alarm https://amzn.to/4AGW8JE - Battery Powered LED Lantern https://amzn.to/46TAnsF - HotHands Hand Warmers https://amzn.to/4rGkAa3 - Emergency Thermal Blanket https://amzn.to/4AV21mW - Foam Weather Stripping https://amzn.to/4yGyMCV - Alkaline AA Batteries https://amzn.to/4rGrxYM - LED Flashlight https://amzn.to/4rCaF5k As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases. Winter always finds the one thing a house forgot. The cold snap that comes a week early, the storm that takes the lights at supper, the three days the roads turn to glare ice. Getting ready for that does not take hundreds of dollars. My grandfather planned for it every October with very little. Here are the ten things Amish families pick up at Dollar Tree before winter, and the five I walk right past. The 10, counting down (Dollar Tree prices change, and your store may differ): 10. The plain white candles. Unscented, steady, and only for backup light. 9. The freezer zipper bags. For matches, batteries, medicines, and paper phone numbers, all dry and together. 8. The silver emergency blanket. Under a real quilt, not instead of one. And one in the car. 7. The disposable gloves. Buy the right size, and keep them for the ugly winter jobs. 6. The backup toilet paper. Not the cheapest place to buy it, but worth keeping a few extra rolls put back. 5. The black marker and masking tape. A date on every freezer bag, a name on every bin, a battery size on every flashlight. 4. The travel mug with a lid. A hot drink stays hot far longer when the top is covered. 3. The alkaline batteries. Only the sizes your house actually uses, and stored beside the flashlight, not inside it. 2. The hand warmers. Small, cheap, and useful when the heat fails or the car is cold. 1. The flashlight. One by every door, one by every bed, and one in the car. And two more that are ours: foam weather strip for the drafts around doors and windows, and plain clay kitty litter for icy steps and walks. The 5 I never touch: 1. Flowerpot heaters. A candle is for light, never for heating a room. 2. Canned fuel for indoor heat. Carbon monoxide has no color and no smell. 3. Thin extension cords for space heaters. Heaters go straight into the wall. 4. Scented candles and wax warmers in a shut-up winter house. They can hide the smell of trouble. 5. The Christmas aisle in October. The list is for the cold first. The little things only fill the gaps. A house ready for winter also needs warm clothes, real blankets or quilts for everyone, a safe way to heat the house, food and water for a few days, the medicines people take, a carbon monoxide alarm, and a way to hear the weather when the power is out. One or two of these each trip to town is enough. That is how most houses get ready without feeling it all in one paycheck. Safety, said plainly: candles go on a hard surface, with nothing above them, never in a child’s room, and never left burning when the last person in the house goes to sleep. Never heat a room with the oven, a grill, or canned fuel. If you smell gas: no switches, no lights, no phone inside, leave the house, and call from outside. Hand warmers are not for bare skin for long, not while sleeping, not for a baby, and if you have diabetes or poor circulation, ask your doctor first.
