Is This The Most Beautiful Display Ever Made?

For about twenty years, glowing orange Nixie tubes showed the numbers on voltmeters, lab counters, early calculators and stock exchange boards. The LED pushed them out in the 1970s, and the last factories to make them continuously, in the Soviet Union, stopped in the early 1990s. Today people pay hundreds of dollars for Nixie clocks, prices have gone up 10 to 20 times, and a small team in a Czech castle makes new ones by hand. This is the story of a 1934 patent from Ohio, the Haydu brothers of New Jersey, a Burroughs tube "with a 24-hour life," the mercury fix, the LED that won, the Soviet tubes that kept the hobby alive, and the craftsman who brought the Nixie back.
