Description
At Woodstock in 1969, Jimi Hendrix played through a Marshall Super Lead. Inside the amp were four glass power tubes called EL34s. They came from Philips, a Dutch company known for light bulbs and radios, and were designed for radios, PA systems and hi-fi at a time when rock music barely existed.
This is the story of the 1926 Philips pentode patent and the British workaround that became the American 6L6, Mullard's huge valve factory in Blackburn, the Dynaco Stereo 70, Pete Townshend's demand for 100 watts, the Marshall Plexi and the stack, the British versus American sound, and why so many new EL34s now come from Russia, Slovakia and China.

Are you an EL34 player or a 6L6 player? Marshall or Fender? Tell me in the comments. And if I got a date, a number or a name wrong, tell me there too. I read every comment and I pin corrections.
