Da Coach Passes Away: Super Bowl Champion Mike Ditka Dies at 86, Full Story & Legacy The sports world and Chicago Bears Nation are in deep mourning following the news that Pro Football Hall of Famer and legendary head coach Mike "Iron Mike" Ditka has passed away at the age of 86 on October 9, 2026. In this breaking news update and life retrospective, we examine the details surrounding his passing and honor the giant of American football. While an official cause of death has not been released by the family, Coach Ditka faced various health challenges in recent years, including a heart attack in 2018 and a stroke in 2012, and passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones. Born Michael Keller Ditka in Carnegie, Pennsylvania, "Da Coach" built an unmatched legacy in NFL history. He revolutionized the tight end position as a rookie with the Chicago Bears in 1961, earning Rookie of the Year honors and winning the 1963 NFL Championship. Ditka became one of only two people in NFL history to win a Super Bowl as a player, an assistant coach (Dallas Cowboys), and a head coach. As head coach of the Chicago Bears from 1982 to 1992, Ditka built and led the legendary 1985 Bears—anchored by the iconic '46 Defense' and Walter Payton—to a 15-1 regular season and a blowout Super Bowl XX victory. He was enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1988 and later served as head coach of the New Orleans Saints and a beloved analyst on ESPN's Sunday NFL Countdown. We explore his complete life story—his upbringing in Aliquippa, Pennsylvania, his college dominance at Pitt, his decades-long marriage to wife, Diana Ditka, his four children (Mark, Matt, Mike Jr., and Megan), estimated net worth, business ventures, and the outpouring of tributes from the NFL, the Chicago Bears franchise, and fans nationwide.
