Description
How America Built the Impossible Golden Gate Bridge During the Great Depression
In 1933, in the depths of the Great Depression, construction began on a bridge across a strait engineers had called impossible for decades — violent currents, near-constant fog, and an active earthquake fault, all funded by bonds backed by ordinary homeowners' own property. Chief engineer Joseph Strauss pioneered genuinely revolutionary safety measures, including a suspended net that saved 19 workers' lives — until it catastrophically failed on February 17, 1937, killing 10 men in a single morning. This is the story of how the Golden Gate Bridge got built anyway, finished essentially on budget, becoming the longest suspension span on Earth at the time.
