Description
Somewhere on a finance floor at Ford World Headquarters in the winter of 1969, a man ran the arithmetic twice. On one side, $4,798, what Ford would charge for the Mustang. On the other, an engine built to racing tolerances in numbers too small to ever pay for the tooling, and a body that had to be trucked out and rebuilt by hand before that engine would fit. The number at the bottom was bigger than the number at the top.
Ford built it anyway, because the man who ordered it did not want a profitable Mustang. This is Bunkie Knudsen's story, the General Motors heir apparent who got passed over, was hired by Henry Ford II within days at $580,952 a year, chose the Mustang over the Torino that would actually do the racing, and was fired 19 months later. Ford never published a per unit loss figure and we do not invent one. We show you everything around it instead.
Ford or Mopar. The shotgun motor or the Hemi. And if you ever saw a real one back when it was just an expensive used car nobody understood, tell us where you were standing.
