You Are the Rarest Thing in the Universe

You are one of roughly 300 million sperm cells that raced toward a single egg on a single night, and you were the one that made it. Every other possible version of you simply never existed. But that's only the last step in a chain of events stretching back 13.8 billion years, and this video goes through the whole thing. Your parents had to meet at exactly the right moment. Their parents had to meet. Go back ten generations and 1,024 people all had to survive, find the right partner, and have the right child. Go back far enough and the entire chain passes through a supervolcanic eruption 74,000 years ago that reduced the whole human population to somewhere between 3,000 and 10,000 people. An asteroid had to kill the dinosaurs 66 million years ago or mammals stay irrelevant forever. The Earth had to form in exactly the right orbit. The odds of you specifically existing have been estimated at one in ten to the power of 2,700,000 — a number so large you'd run out of atoms in the observable universe before you finished writing it. Most matter in the universe drifts through billions of years without ever getting to notice any of it is happening. You get to notice. The question is what you're going to do with something that improbable.
