Description
When the fire of Ragnarök devoured the nine worlds, two humans remained.
Líf and Lífþrasir — "Life" and "Striver After Life" — hid deep within the wood of Hoddmímir while the wolf swallowed the sun, while Surtr's flames rose higher than the mountains, while the green earth sank beneath the grey sea. They did not fight. They did not fall with gods and heroes on the plain of Vígríðr. They simply endured, hidden among the roots of the world, surviving on nothing but the morning dew.
And when it was over (when the fire had burned itself out and the waves grew still) the earth rose from the ocean once more, green and growing, and the two who had hidden stepped out into the light of a new sun. From Líf and Lífþrasir, all the generations of humankind were born anew.
⚔️ THE STORY BEHIND THE SONG
Their tale is one of the oldest and quietest promises in Norse mythology. It is told in the Poetic Edda, in the poem Vafþrúðnismál, where Odin himself, disguised, testing the wisdom of the giant Vafþrúðnir, asks what humans will live when the mighty winter, Fimbulvetr, has passed. The giant answers:
"Líf and Lífþrasir, and they shall lie hid in Hoddmímir's wood; the morning dews shall they have for meat, and from them shall mankind be born."
Snorri Sturluson repeats the prophecy in the Prose Edda (Gylfaginning), placing the two survivors at the very end of his telling of Ragnarök, after the death of Odin, after the fall of Thor, after the world-fire. It is the last thing spoken of the old world, and the first thing spoken of the new.
Because this is the secret the myth keeps: Ragnarök is not only destruction. The sun is swallowed, but she leaves behind a daughter, who rides her mother's paths across the sky. The gods fall, but their sons survive, and Baldr returns from the dead. The earth drowns, but rises again, iðjagrœn, "ever-green," and fields grow unsown. The end of the world is a seed.
Líf and Lífþrasir are that seed in human form. Not warriors, not kings, not chosen by the gods, just two people who refused to stop living. Their names are their whole story: Life, and the One Who Strives After Life.
🎵 ABOUT THIS SONG
This song is sung entirely in Old Norse, the language of the Vikings and of the Eddas themselves, and follows their story in four movements: the burning of the world, the hiding in Hoddmímir's wood, the prophecy of the dew, and the birth of the new age.
Líf ok Lífþrasir — leynask þau í holti Hoddmímis,
af morgindöggu munu þau lifa.
"Líf and Lífþrasir — hidden in the wood of Hoddmímir,
on the morning dew they shall live."
⚔️ EXPLORE THE SAGA
This song is part of a larger journey through Norse mythology here on Valhalla Drums, from the creation of the world out of Ginnungagap, through the age of gods and heroes, to Ragnarök and beyond. Líf & Lífþrasir is where the circle closes... and begins again.
