Description
Experience a haunting new take on Dust in the Wind, reimagined as a visual and musical tribute to those who served.
This classic rock cover strips away the familiar production to focus on the weight of memory and sacrifice. By pairing the iconic 1977 melody with imagery of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and the soldiers who never returned home, we aim to highlight the quiet, lingering grief that remains long after the battles end.
Whether you are a longtime fan of Kansas 1977 or are hearing these lyrics for the first time, this arrangement offers a space to reflect on the cost of war. We built this version to honor the veterans whose names are etched into the wall, ensuring the song serves as both a remembrance and a reflection.

THE STORY BEHIND THE SONG
In the mid-1970s, Kansas was known for long, ambitious progressive rock: violins, keyboards, shifting time signatures, songs that ran for eight minutes. Kerry Livgren was their main songwriter, and the quiet acoustic pattern he had been practicing sounded nothing like them.
"I originally wrote 'Dust in the Wind' as a finger-picking exercise," Livgren remembered. "My wife was listening to me play it one day and she said, 'You know, that's really pretty. You should make a song out of that.' I didn't think it was a Kansas-type song. She said, give it a try anyway. Several million records later, I guess she was right."
He nearly kept it to himself. Only after the band had rehearsed everything else for the new album did he play it for them, and he was met with a stunned silence. The song was recorded in Nashville and released in 1977 on Point of Know Return. Radio stations began playing it straight off the album, and in April 1978 it climbed to No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100, the band's only Top 10 hit in America. The single went gold, and in 2019 it was certified triple platinum.
The words came from somewhere much older than rock. Livgren said the title was inspired by a line in a book of Native American poetry, "for all we are is dust in the wind." The thought behind it is ancient. It echoes the Book of Ecclesiastes and the line from Genesis: "for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return."
It was not an abstract idea for him. When Livgren was nine years old, his grandmother and his family's closest friend died in the same week. He later said that was the moment he understood he would not live forever, and he spent years searching for what a life was for. "Dust in the Wind" is the sound of that search: a young man asking what is left when everything we build turns to dust.
The band never quite knew what to do with it. "We're a hard rock band that's known mostly for a ballad," drummer Phil Ehart said years later. Livgren himself admitted it was not one of his favorite pieces musically. He preferred the bombastic songs. But listeners did not care about genre. They heard themselves in it.
In the original recording, the instrumental break belongs to Robby Steinhardt's violin. Steinhardt died in 2021, at the age of 71. In our version that moment belongs to the guitar, and we played it with him in mind.
We turned it into a slow, heavy blues because the song has always been a blues at heart. It is a song about loss, about time that cannot be bought back, about letting go of what was never ours to keep. The original whispers that truth. We let the guitar cry it out loud, and then we bring it back down to a whisper, the way the wind always settles in the end.
