Queen Victoria: The Secrets She Wrote Down | History for Sleep

For sixty-nine years, Queen Victoria wrote almost every night. Seven hundred volumes. From the age of thirteen until nine days before she died. Her face travelled further than any human face before it. Her private voice has barely been heard at all. This is her life told through the rooms she lived in and the pages she filled in them. A girl at Kensington Palace who was never once left alone, and who was handed a diary by the mother who read it. A young queen at eighteen, walking into a room by herself for the first time in her life. A wife whose husband quietly took over the work of the throne. A widow who was said to be hiding for forty years, and who spent them conducting back-channel diplomacy in Germany, publishing a bestseller no monarch had attempted, and defending two unlikely friendships against her entire court. And at the end, a daughter with a fresh notebook and a fire, deciding what the world would be allowed to keep. Settle in, turn the lights low, and let the story carry you off to sleep. ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ CHAPTERS 0:00 — Seven Hundred Volumes 2:06 — Kensington 11:16 — The Throne 18:07 — Windsor and the Proposal 25:03 — Osborne 32:14 — Balmoral 38:11 — Eighteen Sixty-One 43:50 — Coburg 49:43 — Brown 57:34 — The Ministers 1:05:08 — The Durbar Room 1:12:12 — Frogmore ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ New long-form history every week.
