Description
Jakarta Giant Sea Wall construction: How Indonesia is building an $80 billion coastal barrier to save 55 million people.
Jakarta is sinking 17 centimetres a year. 40% of the city already sits below sea level. Indonesia's answer: an $80 billion sea wall — 32 kilometres of offshore concrete construction sealing Jakarta Bay, eight giant pump stations built into the wall to lift 13 rivers over it, and a freshwater lagoon engineered where the open ocean used to be.
Then the Pantura plan: 575 kilometres of coastal engineering running the entire Java north coast, protecting 55 million people — the largest sea wall construction project in human history.
This engineering documentary covers the full construction breakdown from zero:
• Marine surveys on liquid mud and seabed stabilization
• 5,000-tonne caissons fabricated on land, floated 8 km, and sunk onto sand foundations
• 8 massive pump stations moving 100 cubic metres of river water per second
• The sealed lagoon freshening from saltwater to freshwater as 13 rivers replace the tide
• 575 km of sea wall construction planned across five provinces of Java's north coast
