I've fished Michigan lakes for sixty years, and in this video I count down 20 baits old fishermen kept quiet about — from a $1 can of corn to the head of garlic that the tackle aisle now sells back to you in a $12 bottle.
In this video:
Free bait you can gather in a winter field, a summer stump and a mulberry tree
Catalpa worms, hellgrammites, leeches, cicadas and wasp larvae, and how to store each one
Why fresh cut bait beats every bottled scent: a catfish carries 100,000 to 180,000 taste buds all over its body
The bait rules that catch people out: corn as chum, live crayfish in Wisconsin, salamanders in California and Tennessee
The tackle industry didn't hide any of this. It just went quietly out of fashion around 1961, right after somebody worked out how to sell a worm made of vinyl.
As always: check your state's fishing regulations before you try any of these, they differ everywhere, and never dump leftover bait or bait water into the lake.
What did your family call these baits where you grew up? Tell me below, I read every comment.
