Description
Watch New York grow in 4K from a Lenape island and a Dutch fort to a global city of 8.6 million people – 400 years of history in 9 minutes, as a 3D timelapse of New Amsterdam, colonial, Gilded Age and modern New York built from real geodata and historical research.
From Henry Hudson's Half Moon and the Dutch colony of New Amsterdam to the American Revolution, the Brooklyn Bridge, the Statue of Liberty, the skyscraper race and 9/11: year by year, the city grows on the real terrain of Manhattan, Brooklyn and New York Harbor.

In this 3D timelapse of the history of New York City you'll see Lenapehoking before the Europeans and Henry Hudson's Half Moon in 1609. The Dutch West India Company builds Fort Amsterdam, and New Amsterdam grows behind its wall – today's Wall Street – until the English take over in 1664 and rename it New York. In 1776 the British fleet fills the harbor, a great fire burns a quarter of the city, and the occupation ends on Evacuation Day in 1783. The grid of 1811 and the Erie Canal turn New York into America's greatest port; the Great Fire of 1835 destroys much of the old Dutch heart of the city. The Brooklyn Bridge opens in 1883, the Statue of Liberty is built on Bedloe's Island and dedicated in 1886, and in 1898 five boroughs merge into Greater New York. The Chrysler Building and the Empire State Building race for the sky, the Twin Towers rise in the 1970s – and after September 11, 2001, One World Trade Center rises at Ground Zero. At the end, New Amsterdam appears once more inside today's Manhattan – and shows which of its streets still follow the Dutch town.
No AI imagery: New York is reconstructed year by year on the real terrain of the harbor, based on historical and archaeological research. Early buildings are reconstructions, and population figures before the first U.S. census (1790) are estimates.
