Description
Right now, in the final days of September, the exact size of your 2027 Social Security raise is being locked in and almost no senior knows the math is happening. The number isn't announced until October, but the data that decides it is being measured this month, and once September closes, it's set.
Here's the part nobody explains: your COLA isn't decided by what seniors actually spend. It's built from a formula most people have never heard of, and understanding it before the announcement is the difference between planning your year and being blindsided by it.
🔹 The three months that decide everything: your 2027 COLA is calculated from the CPI-W inflation readings for July, August, and September. September is the last piece. After the 30th, the raise is mathematically locked and just waiting to be announced in October.
🔹 Why the number feels too low: the government uses CPI-W, a basket based on working, urban wage-earners — not retirees. A senior-specific index called CPI-E exists and usually runs higher, but it isn't used to set your check.
🔹 What the projections say: early estimates for 2027 land in the mid-3% to low-4% range (the Senior Citizens League has floated around 3.9%). For comparison, the 2026 COLA was 2.8%, which raised the average retired-worker benefit to about $2,071 a month.
🔹 The raise you see isn't the raise you keep: the 2026 Medicare Part B premium climbed to $202.90 a month, and it's deducted straight from your check. A COLA on paper can be swallowed by the premium increase before you ever see it.
🔹 The frozen trap most seniors miss: Social Security benefit taxation thresholds ($25,000 single / $32,000 married) have never been adjusted for inflation since the 1980s. Every COLA nudges more seniors over that line, meaning your "raise" can quietly push part of your benefit into being taxed.
💡 Bottom line: you can't change the COLA, but you can stop it from surprising you. Know the real number early, subtract the Part B premium, and check whether your rising benefit is about to cross a tax threshold — before the October announcement, not after.
