Description
Six escort carriers. Three destroyers. Four "tin can" destroyer escorts. Standing between them and the most powerful battleship ever built: almost nothing at all.
On the morning of October 25th, 1944, off a Philippine island called Samar, Vice Admiral Takeo Kurita had the entire American invasion of the Philippines within his grasp. His Center Force — built around the battleship Yamato — had already survived a submarine ambush and a five-hour air assault that sank her sister ship, Musashi, just to reach this moment. With the landing beaches at Leyte Gulf virtually undefended, all that stood in his way was a group of ships that were never built to fight a battleship at all.
This is the story of Taffy 3: the destroyer captain who charged the Japanese battle line alone, the gunner who died trying to load one last shell by hand, and the pilots who kept diving even after they had nothing left to drop. It's also the story of the admiral who came within a single decision of changing the outcome of the war in the Pacific — and then turned around and sailed home.
To this day, historians still argue about why.
Disclaimer:
This video is a narrated historical documentary based on official naval records, after-action reports, and published historical research. Certain details — most notably Admiral Kurita's exact reasoning for withdrawing — remain genuinely debated among historians and are presented here as the leading theories rather than settled fact.
