Description

At 3:30 in the morning on May 13, 1969, the men coming through the wire at Firebase Airborne were wearing loincloths and shorts, and most of the trip flares in their way had been tied down with strips of bamboo. By the time the first shot was fired, they were already inside. It was a tiny 101st Airborne Division firebase above the A Shau Valley, a few miles from Hamburger Hill during Operation Apache Snow, and it got a fraction of the attention. This video is built on the Army's own after action report: four days of enemy planning and recon, an artillery battery that never got a single round off, Sergeant First Class George Parker's mortar crews holding the knoll, Phillip Jordan's gun crew firing beehive rounds point blank, and the one thing the report says decided the night. Every claim sourced. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 📕 THE BOOKS FROM TRUE VIETNAM DOCS First-time readers get a lower price, applied automatically at checkout ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ BOOK ONE · The Documented History of MACV-SOG in Vietnam ($7.99) The book mentioned in the video. The summer before Airborne, SOG recon men were already trading rumors about NVA sappers in loincloths, and an August 1968 briefing for an A Shau target warned about them. Book One is SOG's war on paper: the missions, the arsenal, the men and the myths, in six chapters. We wrote it for the men and for the families who never got the story. 👉 https://www.truevietnamdocs.com/sog BOOK TWO · The Documented History of the Gear of the Vietnam War ($8.99) If a fire direction center in an exposed steel box got to you, this book follows the same kind of paper trail through everything a grunt carried: the rifle, the ruck, the radio, the rations, the armor and the boots. Who decided, who was warned, and who was never held to account. Nine chapters, 193 pages. 👉 https://www.truevietnamdocs.com/gear Buying for a father or grandfather who came home from over there? It is the most common reason people do. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ▶️ Why sappers stripped down to fight in the first place: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MzRxlsjVEZo ⚖️ WHAT THE RECORD SHOWS → Not all of them were stripped bare. The Army's report describes the dead in loincloths or shorts, with several wearing nothing at all. → You'll see Airborne called overrun. The record doesn't support it. The sappers got into the north end and wrecked a battery, but the base held. → The American death toll doesn't reconcile. The after action report lists 22 killed. The Virtual Wall names 27 men who died from the attack. We found nothing that explains the gap, so you get both. 📚 FULL SOURCE LIST Official and primary - U.S. Army, After Action Report: Sapper Attack on FSB Airborne, 13 May 1969 (transcription, A/2-501st Infantry association): https://www.alphaavengers.com/firebase-airborne.htm - HQ 3d Brigade, 101st Airborne Division, Apache Snow AAR (1969), incl. the 2/319th Artillery AAR: https://www.2ndbde.org/archives/after_action_reports/operation_apache_snow_hq_3bde_25_june_1969.pdf - Distinguished Service Cross citation, SFC George W.
