How Marine Drill Instructors Are Made

Drill Instructor School is where the Marines who will train America’s future recruits are prepared for the job. The 11-week course develops selected Staff Non-commissioned and Non-commissioned Officers in leadership, command presence, instructional techniques, military knowledge and physical fitness. Established in October 1952, the school has evolved from a four-week program while maintaining the same core mission: preparing Marines to lead, instruct and set the example for recruits. Leadership remains the cornerstone of the course, with training covering recruit-training procedures, drill, physical fitness, military subjects and the skills needed to turn recruits into Marines.
