NEW CALEDONIAN CROW LIFE CYCLE: Why is the snake biting the STICK, not the bird?

NEW CALEDONIAN CROW — Why is the snake biting the STICK, not the bird? The snake is at striking distance. The crow does not bite back. It holds a stick. That stick is not a toy. On this island it is how Corvus moneduloides keeps a body-length of air between itself and death — and how it pulls food out of wood that no beak can reach. This is the full breeding cycle of the New Caledonian crow. A pair that already belongs to each other. No lek. No display ground. They preen, they pass food, they choose a mossy V-fork in the rainforest and build a stick cup together — first twig, then a pad, then walls, lining, moss on the rim. She lays two or three eggs. She incubates alone. He feeds her. Rain hits the open cup. Heat sits on her back. If he is late, the clutch cools. Three chicks hatch pink, blind, almost naked. She covers them. Both parents hunt: leaf litter, bark, rotting logs. The food that matters most is the grub that only a stick can extract. They bring it back. The smallest chick waits. Weeks later the oldest bird steps onto the rim, hops to the nest trunk, still gets fed on the branch. The other two are still in the cup. Nobody is independent. Then the year that titles skip: the young follow. They watch a parent work a hole. They pick up a twig and miss. They beg and sometimes the adult turns away. Tool skill does not arrive at fledging. It takes months, sometimes more than a year. If the stick in that thumbnail snaps, the snake is at the bird. If the parent never brings the grub the stick can reach, the chick on the rim goes hungry. One species. One island. One stick doing two jobs: keep the snake off, keep the brood alive. Watch to the end for the first departure from the cup — and for the moment the young bird tries the tool and fails. ⚠️ Content Disclaimer (AI): This video is based on the creator’s original script with AI assistance for visualization and storytelling.
