Description

Nearly 4,000 years before modern medicine, the Sumerians of ancient Mesopotamia were already practicing organized healing — and the world's oldest known medical text, a clay tablet from Nippur dating to around 2100 BC, records prescriptions and remedies written by a physician known as an asu. In the city of Isin, temples dedicated to Gula, the goddess of healing, functioned as some of the earliest places where the sick gathered for treatment, care, and recovery — a prototype of what we would now call a hospital. But this early medical tradition collided with law and religion: when Hammurabi's Code was carved into stone around 1750 BC, it imposed brutal penalties on physicians whose patients died or were harmed, including having their hands cut off, while illness itself was increasingly blamed on demons and divine punishment rather than treatable causes. For thousands of years, the fear of punishment and the dominance of exorcist-priests pushed hands-on medicine into the shadows, and true hospitals wouldn't reappear until the ancient Sri Lankan and later Byzantine and Islamic worlds. This is the forgotten story of how humanity built its first house of healing — and then spent three millennia turning its back on it.
