Description

Before bulk milk tankers, every dairy farm in Britain sent its milk to market in steel milk churns, left on a churn stand at the farm gate for the churn lorry to collect each morning. This documentary follows a 1960s milk churn round through the lanes of Somerset: the drivers, the creamery, the milk trains to London and the Milk Marketing Board system that held it all together, and how the bulk tanker quietly replaced it within a generation. Do you remember a churn stand near you? Tell us in the comments. Visuals are illustrative reconstructions created for this documentary. #BritishLorryArchive #MilkChurns #BritishHistory
