Description

For years, Üçağızlı II on the Mediterranean coast of southern Turkey appeared to offer a remarkably tidy story about the Out-of-Africa expansion. Archaeologists dated its upper archaeological sequence to approximately 59,000 years ago and interpreted the associated stone tools as evidence that modern humans were moving from the Levant into Anatolia during the period when the ancestors of living non-Africans supposedly began their great expansion across Eurasia. But the deeper researchers dig, the less straightforward the site becomes. Questions surround the correlation of its layers, the positions and ages of individual dating samples, and the identity of the humans represented by its fragmentary teeth and jawbone. Some remains come from considerably deeper deposits that may be 70,000 to 85,000 years old, while the Üçağızlı II mandible has been described as resembling a juvenile Neanderthal more closely than Homo sapiens. Even some isolated teeth do not fall cleanly into either category. In this video, we examine the stratigraphy, dating evidence, stone tools, teeth, and controversial jawbone from Üçağızlı II. Was this really a 59,000-year-old station on the great Out-of-Africa migration route, or has an uncertain and complicated site been forced into a story that its evidence does not securely support?
