Description

In July 1956, the Italian luxury liner Andrea Doria sank forty miles off Nantucket after a collision with the Stockholm — taking forty-six lives with it. The wreck settled in two hundred and forty feet of water. Within weeks, divers were already descending to it. They haven't stopped. And neither has the death toll. At least twenty-two scuba divers have died attempting to reach the Andrea Doria since it sank — more than any other wreck diving site in the United States. The ship has been called the Mount Everest of wreck diving. That comparison is accurate in ways nobody advertises: Everest still collects bodies too. This video documents what made the Andrea Doria so dangerous, why experienced technical divers keep dying there, and what the record of those deaths reveals about the gap between preparation and survival at two hundred and forty feet. The wreck is still drawing divers. The hull is still collapsing. And the question of where the line is between a dive that goes right and one that doesn't has never been answered.
