Description
I compared Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, and the Philippines as possible places to retire in Southeast Asia.
Cambodia appeared to offer the lowest cost. Vietnam delivered impressive value. Thailand looked like the strongest all-around choice. But choosing somewhere to live is very different from choosing a vacation destination.
In this video, I look beyond cheap rent and restaurant prices. I compare these four countries based on the things that shape an ordinary life: housing, food, transportation, healthcare, communication, independence, social connection, and how manageable daily life might feel after the excitement wears off.
The Philippines did not win every category. It comes with genuine compromises, including electricity costs, traffic, heat, infrastructure, and the need to think carefully about healthcare.
But it offered something that became more important the longer I considered the decision: a realistic opportunity to communicate, remain independent, connect with people, and build an ordinary life that still feels good.
This is not a universal ranking. The right answer depends on your finances, health, priorities, and the compromises you are prepared to accept.
Which country would fit you best: Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, or the Philippines?
