Description

My name is Darlene Hollis, and I cooked in a school kitchen for thirty-five years, keeping four hundred children's lunches hot in a cinder block building that was doing its best to be cold. You turn the furnace up. You put a heater in the back bedroom and a towel under the door. That room still never warms, and then the bill comes. You did the work. The method failed you. You do not have a heating problem. You have a leaking problem. The furnace is making plenty of heat. The room cannot hold it. Cold air is heavier, so it slides in low under the doors while your warm air floats up and squeezes out at the top. That moving air is what makes you cold. A still room at sixty-five feels fine. A drafty one at sixty-five feels like a porch. So you find the holes and plug them. A pool noodle for the door, rope caulk for the window cracks, bubble wrap on old glass. About six dollars, once, and half of it comes back off in spring. Against a space heater that cost me near forty-five dollars a month for one room. In this video I show you the candle walk that finds every leak in five minutes, the gap under the door and why it is a fifteen-square-inch hole in your wall, cutting the noodle with a bread knife, pressing rope caulk in with your thumb, misting bubble wrap onto cold glass, shutting off rooms nobody uses, working your curtains on a schedule, and the October screwdriver walk on every door. I also tell you where it falls short. If your walls have no insulation at all, this helps and it will not make the room toasty. Ten degrees was my back bedroom. A barer room may give you less. WHAT YOU WILL NEED A plain candle, or incense if a flame near curtains makes you nervous A foam pool noodle, $1.25 A bread knife A roll of rope caulk, right at $4.00 A shrink-film window kit, a few dollars for two windows, or plain bubble wrap A thrift store quilt, $3.00 A screwdriver A WORD OF CAUTION Keep the candle a good arm's length from curtains and bedspreads, or use incense instead. And if a room has a gas appliance in it, a gas water heater or vented gas heater, do not seal it up tight. Those need air to burn safe. Plug the rooms where people sit and leave the utility spaces be.
