Description
Willem Dafoe revealed why he changed the way his own last name is pronounced, and the explanation is as funny as it is smart. Conan O'Brien dug up an old tape of a young Dafoe saying his name as William "Day-foe" and teased him for letting everyone mispronounce it for 40 years. Dafoe explained that his family was split right down the middle, with half saying "Day-foe" and the other half "Duh-foe." The problem with "Day-foe" was that people just didn't get it. He'd check in at the dentist as William "Day-foe," and they'd reply, "Okay, Dave!" So when he became an actor, he went with "Duh-foe," a name that flows better, sounds nicer, and is a lot harder to forget. Turns out the secret behind one of Hollywood's most memorable names was making sure nobody called him Dave ever again.
