Description
Nepal Disaster: How Nepal Raced to Dig a Channel Before a Mountain-Sized Lake Could Burst
A massive landslide buried a Nepali village and completely blocked the Sunkoshi River, killing or leaving missing more than 150 people — and creating a second, even larger threat. The debris instantly dammed the river, forming a new lake that grew by the hour, threatening a catastrophic flood downstream toward a hydropower station, a critical highway, and communities stretching all the way into India. With roughly a week before the unstable dam could fail on its own, Nepal's army raced to excavate a controlled spillway channel by hand and heavy machinery, working around the clock against rising water and unstable ground. This is the story of that 12-day race against the clock.
