Description

It needed TWO diesel engines just to climb a hill, and it nearly dragged General Motors into a lawsuit with its own biggest customer. In 1954, Greyhound's Scenicruiser was the most advanced bus in America: forty feet long, wrapped in aluminum, air conditioned, with a two-level cabin and panoramic skylights. But GM never had an engine big enough to power it, so engineers bolted two together instead, connected by a fragile fluid coupling. By 1956, Greyhound's president publicly threatened to sue GM over "repeated and extraordinary mechanical failures," a threat that triggered a federal antitrust case reshaping how every bus company in America bought engines for the next decade. #GreyhoundBus #ClassicAmericanCars #AutomotiveHistory
