Description
A retired janitor in Vermont held his coat shut with safety pins and left about $8 million. Seven miles away, a retired groundskeeper who ran his errands on a riding lawn mower left his small town $3.8 million. Almost nobody knew about either one. So how many retired Americans are secret millionaires right now? This video counts them with the Federal Reserve's newest Survey of Consumer Finances (2025), the first one that also asks families what they spend.
In this video:
• How many retired households are worth $1 million or more, and what the typical one looks like
• How many millionaires spend less each month than the typical retired household
• What's actually parked in their driveways (car value, car age, bought new or used)
• Their homes, and how many own them with no mortgage
• How many never received an inheritance, and how many never finished college
• Three true stories: Ronald Read (Brattleboro, Vermont), Geoffrey Holt (Hinsdale, New Hampshire) and Sylvia Bloom (New York)
• How many give to charity, and how many expect to leave a sizable estate

How it was counted: "Retired households" are households where the head is 65 or older and not working: about 29.4 million in 2025. Net worth is everything a household owns, the home included, minus every debt; "millionaire" means a net worth of $1 million or more. "Typical" is the median, the household right in the middle. A "secret millionaire" in this video is a retired millionaire household that spent less over the past year than the typical retired household (about $2,250 a month), using the survey's new question on all spending, which leaves out rent, mortgage and loan payments. Car value is the industry guidebook value of every vehicle the household owns; "newest car" uses the model year; "bought used" uses the survey's new-or-used question for each vehicle. "Never inherited" means the family said it has never received an inheritance or substantial gift or trust (the survey does not count inheritances from a late spouse). Charity is giving of $500 or more in 2024; "sizable estate" is the survey's question on whether the family expects to leave one. The street of 100 houses stands for all retired households, each house about 294,000 of them. The Fed interviewed more than 4,000 families and weights them to represent the whole country, so every number is an estimate and is rounded; all calculations are the channel's own, from the public data files.
The three stories are retold from the news reports above. The people in them are shown as cartoon drawings, seen from behind; the drawings are not their likenesses.
