Description
When the last fire has consumed all it can, the world does not remain empty.
From the ash, green life begins to return. The fields rise without being sown. A new sun crosses the sky. The old hatred between brothers is finally laid down. And from the road beyond death, Baldr comes home.
“Baldr’s Return” follows the world after Ragnarök, not the moment of destruction, but the sacred silence that comes after it. The song looks beyond the burning of the Nine Realms toward one of the most beautiful promises in Norse mythology: that the end is not truly the end.
The gods have fallen. Asgard is gone. The walls, weapons, and kingdoms of the old age have disappeared. Yet beneath the grey earth, life has not forgotten how to grow. The land becomes green again, the wounds of the world begin to close, and the surviving gods gather where the old divine stronghold once stood.
Among those who return are Baldr and Höðr: the radiant god and the blind brother whose hand caused his death. They do not return as enemies. They walk together through the new grass, beyond accusation and vengeance, into a world that can no longer be built upon the hatred of the one before it.
This is a song about renewal after unbearable loss.
It is about the light that survives beneath ash.
It is about a world learning to live again.
BALDR — THE SHINING GOD:
Baldr is one of the sons of Odin and Frigg and is remembered as the most beloved of the Æsir. He is associated with radiance, beauty, goodness, purity, and the terrible grief caused by the loss of something innocent.
According to the Norse tradition, Baldr began to dream of his own death. Fearing for him, Frigg sought promises from the beings and substances of the world that they would never harm her son. Stone, iron, fire, water, animals, trees, sickness, and weapons were bound by this oath.
Only the mistletoe was overlooked because it appeared too young and harmless to be feared.
When the gods discovered that nothing could injure Baldr, they turned his invulnerability into a game. They threw weapons and stones at him, knowing every object would turn aside. Loki learned of the forgotten mistletoe, fashioned it into a deadly weapon, and placed it in the hand of Baldr’s blind brother, Höðr. Guided by Loki, Höðr cast it toward Baldr.
The smallest and least threatening thing in the world became the instrument of the gods’ greatest sorrow.
BALDR IN HEL:
After Baldr’s death, the gods tried to bring him back from Hel. The ruler of the dead agreed that Baldr could return if every being in existence wept for him. Nearly all creation mourned, but one figure, commonly understood as Loki in disguise, refused.
Baldr therefore remained among the dead.
Yet his story did not end there. Norse prophecy places his true return after Ragnarök, when the old world has burned and a renewed earth rises from the sea.
Baldr’s return is not merely the restoration of one god. It marks the return of innocence, reconciliation, and sacred order after cosmic ruin.
BALDR AND HÖÐR AFTER RAGNARÖK:
One of the most moving images in the surviving Norse tradition is that Baldr and Höðr return together.
The victim and the brother whose hand killed him are no longer divided.
The song imagines them walking side by side from Hel’s dark realm into the grass where Asgard once stood. Their reunion represents more than forgiveness between two gods. It suggests that the renewed world cannot carry every accusation, feud, and inherited hatred of the former age.
Something must be released before life can truly begin again.
Was Höðr forgiven?
Was blame itself left behind?
Or did the destruction of the old world reveal that Höðr had always been another victim of Loki’s deception?
The prophecy gives us their return, but it does not tell us what words passed between them. That silence leaves one of Norse mythology’s greatest mysteries for us to contemplate.
THE DAUGHTER OF THE SUN
Before the sun is swallowed during Ragnarök, she gives birth to a daughter. After the destruction of the old world, this daughter follows her mother’s path across the sky.
She is not the same sun returning unchanged.
She is a new light for a new creation.
That image stands at the heart of this song: the dawn does not deny that darkness came. It rises because something carried the light forward.
The daughter sun becomes a symbol of inheritance, not of kingdoms, weapons, or vengeance, but of light itself. What the former world could not preserve forever, it entrusted to the world that would follow.
