Description
Railguns use electrical current and magnetic force to launch projectiles at extreme speed—but the term covers far more than one design. This video explains the major railgun architectures, how each one works, and why electromagnetic railguns are still mostly prototype weapons.
Starting with conventional two-rail launchers, we move through plasma-armature and hybrid systems, augmented railguns, distributed-energy-store and distributed-current-feed designs, multirail and quadrupole layouts, helical railguns, pre-accelerated hybrids, plasma railguns, and repetitive-fire systems. Coilguns are kept separate because they use a different electromagnetic launch method.
The video also follows real development programs, including the U.S. Navy electromagnetic railgun, Japan’s ATLA program and shipboard testing, European cooperation, Turkish demonstrators, and China’s naval test installation. Finally, we examine the problems still preventing routine operational use: rail erosion, pulsed-power demands, heat, barrel life, cooling, projectile survivability, guidance, and repeatable firing.
