Description
A rare look at Honoré de Balzac (1799–1850), one of the greatest French novelists of the 19th century and the author of La Comédie humaine.
This extraordinary daguerreotype was made by Louis-Auguste Bisson in 1842 and is regarded as the only surviving photographic portrait of Balzac, aside from its reversed counterpart.
Balzac posed with his shirt collar open and his hand resting over his heart — giving us a remarkably direct glimpse of the real man behind one of France’s greatest literary legacies.
This historic photograph has been carefully restored and brought to life while preserving his authentic historical appearance.
The original daguerreotype is preserved by the Maison de Balzac in Paris.
