Description
Two in the morning, a man comes around the side of a house, and one step crunches. He stops, because the one thing he can't find out standing there is whether anybody inside heard it. After 31 years learning how people move when they don't want to be heard, I can tell you that a burglar needs silence more than he needs a way in, and you can take that silence away from him for under ten dollars.
This whole video is one cheap trick, taken apart from every angle: the one window on your house the street can't see and why the first bag goes there, which gravel crunches and which kind of rock is worse than bare dirt (it's quiet underfoot and the right size to put through your glass), how deep to lay it so it still crunches after a winter of rain, the path most burglars take to your back door, the night test you do from your own bedroom, the cheap upgrades that make it stronger, and exactly what to do if you ever hear that crunch at night.
It warns and it discourages. It doesn't lock anybody out, and I'll tell you plainly what it can and can't do.
Tell me in the comments: what's on the ground under your most hidden window right now?
