Asif, the uncompromising visionary who dared to dream bigger than anyone else in Bollywood. Born in Etawah with only an eighth-grade education, Asif arrived in Mumbai and worked as a tailor before assisting his brother-in-law, Nazir Ahmed Khan. His passion and mastery of the Urdu language soon paved the way for his directorial debut, Phool, in 1945. However, his true obsession began when he read Imtiaz Ali Taj’s play Anarkali. For sixteen years, Asif battled catastrophic hurdles to bring Mughal-e-Azam to life. He saw his initial financier flee to Pakistan during the Partition, his original lead actor Chandra Mohan pass away, and his lead pair—Dilip Kumar and Madhubala—turn into bitter ex-lovers who refused to speak to each other off-camera. Despite these obstacles, Asif convinced industrialist Shapoorji Pallonji to open his vaults, hired over eight thousand Indian Army soldiers for battle sequences, built the legendary Belgian glass Sheesh Mahal, and made Madhubala wear real iron chains in prison scenes. Behind the grandeur lay a volatile personal life filled with stormy marriages to actress Nigar Sultana, dancer Sitara Devi, and Dilip Kumar’s sister Akhtar Asif, which permanently fractured his friendship with Dilip Kumar. When he embarked on his next magnum opus, Love and God, tragedy struck again with the deaths of lead actor Guru Dutt and later Asif himself on 9 March 1971 at just forty-eight years of age.
