Description
How did the Yakuts survive -71°C in Siberia? They turned their cattle into a living furnace to combat the extreme freeze.
The Yakuts of northeast Russia faced some of the most punishing conditions on Earth. In the depths of the Siberian cold, where temperatures drop low enough to freeze boiling water, traditional methods of heating were insufficient. Instead, they engineered their homes to rely on biological heat rather than just combustion.
This unique survival strategy centered on the balagan, a structure designed to integrate the family home with the cattle barn. By sharing a wall with livestock, the Yakuts utilized the animals as a living radiator. This method of human thermoregulation allowed them to maintain a survivable temperature inside, even as the world outside froze solid.
The genius of this Yakut architecture lay in its insulation. With walls made of packed earth and turf, and windows crafted from ice, the home sealed out the wind while retaining the heat radiated by the animals. It was a symbiotic arrangement where neither the humans nor the cattle could have endured the winter alone.
