Description
Before the skyscrapers, before the grid, Manhattan was an island of forest.
Watch 600 years of New York unfold in one continuous timelapse, from Lenape homeland in 1400 through New Amsterdam, the Great Fire, the 1811 grid, Central Park, the Brooklyn Bridge and the rise of the skyline, to the city lights of 2026.
How this was made:
This is a computer-generated simulation, not historical footage or real satellite imagery. The video was produced with the help of AI (Claude by Anthropic, which wrote custom rendering software that generates every frame. The land, water, bridges and street layouts are based on real geographic data. The individual buildings, farms and the pace of growth between historical milestones are procedurally generated to be realistic, but they are not a building-by-building reconstruction. Dates of key events follow the historical record.
