Description
What would you do if a grizzly bear walked into your camp in the middle of the night? Would you run, stand your ground, or play dead?
I'm Ezekiel Kingbird, and after 25 years guiding people through Montana's Bob Marshall Wilderness, I've learned that one wrong decision around a grizzly can turn a dangerous encounter into a deadly one.
In this video, I'll explain why playing dead isn't always the right choice, how to recognize defensive and non-defensive grizzly behavior, and what to do when a bear approaches your campsite.
I'll also share practical lessons about bear spray, food storage, campsite safety, and the warning signs you should never ignore.
Some of these lessons come from generations of experience living in bear country, while others are based on modern wildlife safety guidance. Knowing the difference could save your life.
Remember, a frightened grizzly and a bear investigating you or your food may require very different responses. Playing dead can be appropriate during certain defensive attacks, but it can be dangerous during a predatory attack.
