📘 Brenda Cooks: 162 recipes for every kind of week your kitchen goes through
https://brendacooks.com/
It's Thursday night, you open the refrigerator, see nothing, and forty minutes later a stranger hands you a thirty-eight-dollar paper bag. There was a supper in your house. There were probably four. Our grandmothers knew that "nothing in the house" really meant flour, cornmeal, a few potatoes, an onion, some milk, a couple of eggs, and a jar of grease on the back of the stove.
In this one I'll walk you through 10 suppers they made off that shelf, none more than about three dollars for the whole pot:
🍞 Milk toast, fried cornmeal mush, and a potato soup thickened with nothing but the potatoes
🥚 Creamed eggs on toast (and the one-minute step that makes a white sauce taste right), plus macaroni and tomatoes
🍅 Tomato gravy over biscuits, and skillet potatoes and onions, lid on and then lid off
🫘 A pot of beans and a pan of cornbread that make three suppers, and rivels, the little dumplings made from flour and milk
…and number one, milk gravy over bread, plus the jar on the back of the stove that makes every one of these taste like food.
Nobody can sell you a jar of your own drippings. Peel four potatoes and an onion tonight instead of opening the app.
If cooking from the cupboard and a smart, thrifty kitchen sound good to you, subscribe and stick around — that's what we do here every week. 💛
What did your grandmother make when the week ran out, and what did she call it? Tell me down in the comments.
