📘 Brenda Cooks: 162 recipes for every kind of week your kitchen goes through

January is when the grocery bill hurts worst. The heat's running, Christmas is still sitting on the card, and nothing fresh is cheap, so out come the frozen lasagna and the soup in a can. But winter used to be the cheapest time of year to eat, with supper coming out of things that keep: a sack of potatoes, a bag of beans, a head of cabbage, a bone, and a pot with some time on it. Our grandmothers fed whole families all winter that way for next to nothing.
In this one I'll walk you through 10 old-fashioned winter dinners that cost almost nothing, with what each one costs me:
🥔 Potato soup, fried potatoes with eggs, and hamburger gravy that stretches half a pound of meat around the table
🥬 Fried cabbage and noodles, salmon patties, and a one-pot goulash that feeds six
🍲 Tuna noodle casserole without the can, and split pea soup on a ham bone
🫘 Chicken and dumplings, and a pot of beans with skillet cornbread that turns into three suppers
…and why all of this fell out of fashion when it never stopped working.
Put one pot on this weekend and you'll feed the family for about a dollar a plate. A little know-how feeds your family well and keeps your money right where it belongs.
If saving money and running a smart, thrifty kitchen sound good to you, subscribe and stick around — that's what we do here every week. 💛
What was the winter supper at your house growing up? Tell me down in the comments.
