Description

Venezuela’s oil wealth should have made it prosperous. This video examines how its oil economy unravelled and who benefits from the new US oil deal. Yet since 2010 its GDP per capita has fallen by more than 75% and over 8 million people have left. In January 2026, US special forces seized Nicolás Maduro, and Washington now effectively runs the country's oil industry through his former vice president, Delcy Rodríguez. In this video we trace how Hugo Chávez turned that oil into a political piggybank, kicking out foreign oil majors and draining PDVSA to fund his welfare state long before sanctions arrived. Then we break down Trump's new oil deal, which hands the US government a 35% stake in a company holding 100-year concessions over 65 billion barrels, roughly a fifth of Venezuela's reserves. Finally, we look at what Venezuelans get out of it: about $19 from every $65 barrel, under an unelected government with no election date. With $153 billion needed to rebuild the industry and only $7 billion committed so far, the long-term value of those barrels may come down to ballots. 00:00 - Intro 01:17 - From Riches to Rags 06:13 - The Art of the Deal 10:46 - Petrocracy Inc.
