Description

The Osiris Shaft: The Hidden Underground Chamber Beneath the Great Sphinx (Ancient Egypt Mystery) Buried over 100 feet beneath the Great Sphinx of Giza lies one of Ancient Egypt’s most mysterious discoveries — the Osiris Shaft. Hidden beneath the Giza Plateau, this underground structure contains carved chambers, sealed coffins, and a massive empty basalt sarcophagus at its deepest level. First documented in 1837 but only fully excavated in 1999 by Zahi Hawass, the shaft revealed artifacts dating back to the Old Kingdom (around 2300 BC). Its lowest chamber — partially submerged and surrounded by a water-filled moat — closely matches a description by Herodotus from 450 BC, once dismissed as legend. Even more unsettling: surveys in the 1970s and 1980s detected hidden tunnels and underground voids directly beneath the Sphinx that remain unexplored to this day. Ancient Egyptians referred to this site as the “House of Osiris, Lord of the Underground Tunnels.” Despite opening for limited access in 2017, the Osiris Shaft remains virtually unknown — hidden in plain sight beneath millions of visitors every year.
