Ground Zero Burned for 99 Days After 9/11 — What Officials Kept Hidden Is Still Killing People

On December 19th, 2001, the fires beneath Ground Zero were finally extinguished. That was 99 days after the towers fell. While most people remember the collapse, fewer understand what happened underground in the months that followed. Temperatures in the debris field reached levels comparable to a cremation furnace, burning continuously across sixteen acres with no containment and no control. The New York City Office of the Chief Medical Examiner processed more than 21,900 human remains. As of 2026, over 1,099 victims remain unidentified. This video examines the fire science behind what made identification so difficult, the political pressure to clear the site faster than forensics could keep up, and the documented failure of the EPA to accurately communicate the health risks to thousands of workers who were told the air was safe. It wasn't. More than 68 cancers are now formally linked to Ground Zero exposure. The death toll from 9/11-related illness has surpassed the number killed on the day of the attacks.
