Description
All figures in this video are the rates that apply from Sunday 20 September 2026, taken from the Department of Social Services indexation rates list.
This Sunday, most Australian pensioners get a pay rise: $36.80 a fortnight for a single ($1,237.70), $55.60 combined for a couple ($933 each). DSP (21 and over), Carer Payment and JobSeeker rise the same day. Nothing to claim.
But this round isn't only indexation. A rule change lands with it - the
Pension Supplement when you're outside Australia - and the figure going around for what overseas pensioners lose is wrong by about three times.
CHAPTERS:
0:00 A pay rise for most, a pay cut for some
0:43 DSP, Carer Payment and JobSeeker
1:16 The Pension Supplement rule change
1:50 12 weeks instead of 6
2:25 After 12 weeks, it stops completely
2:48 The real number: $30.10, not $88
3:21 Who actually goes backward
4:04 The three numbers that don't move
5:15 What moves and what doesn't (screenshot this)
5:26 Deeming - the one moving against you
6:05 Why your number won't be $36.80
7:04 The new cut-off limits
7:34 Commonwealth Seniors Health Card
7:49 Pulling it together
WHAT'S IN THIS ONE:
- The new rates, fast: Age Pension, DSP, Carer Payment, JobSeeker
- The Pension Supplement rule change from 20 September: the full supplement now runs for 12 weeks of temporary travel instead of 6 (about 68,000 people better off) - and after 12 weeks, or on a permanent move, it stops completely instead of dropping to the basic amount
- The real number for the 88,000 already living overseas: the $30.10 basic amount stops, not the $88 full supplement - and with the base rate indexed up $35.10 at the same time, a single is $5.00 a fortnight AHEAD, not behind
- Who actually goes backward: transitional pensioners paid overseas (-$13.00 single, -$10.50 each)
- The three numbers that DON'T move on Sunday: the assets-free area, the income-free area, and the deeming thresholds - all frozen until 1 July 2027, along with the Work Bonus, gifting limits, and super caps (screenshot that table)
- The one number moving against you: deeming, up to 1.75% and 3.75%
- Why your own figure won't be $36.80: Rent Assistance ($223.80, the sharer rate and who it doesn't apply to), transitional pensions (+$19.30), illness-separated couples, the new cut-off limits, and the Commonwealth Seniors Health Card income limits ($105,048 single / $168,076 couple)
Every figure was checked against the Department of Social Services 20 September 2026 rates list and Services Australia's own pages on 14 September 2026.
Services Australia's rate pages will show the older figures until Sunday.
