Description
Can we understand something without being able to completely explain it?
A piece of music can reveal something about grief. A poem can express something about love, memory or loneliness that a definition cannot. Yet we live in a world increasingly built around measurement, calculation and explanation.
In this episode of The Thinking Room, we explore the philosophy of Spanish thinker María Zambrano and her idea of razón poética — poetic reason.
Zambrano did not argue that emotion should replace logic or that facts do not matter. Her question was more subtle: are there dimensions of human experience that abstract reason alone cannot fully reach?
From philosophy and poetry to exile, modern metrics, algorithms and artificial intelligence, poetic reason challenges us to reconsider what we actually mean when we say that we “know” something.
And it leaves us with a question:
If something cannot be completely measured, proven or explained, does that make it less true — or does it reveal a limit in the way we search for truth?
The Thinking Room explores philosophy, ideas, history and the deeper questions behind the world around us.
